Stats and Facts

Here are the answers to some of the most commonly asked questions we’ve been getting about our baby and upcoming birth experience.

Timing

We found out we were pregnant on February 14th, 2020: Valentine’s Day! Little baby’s official due date is October 17th. On that date, our little one will have been baking for exactly 40 weeks. However, anywhere between 38-42 weeks is considered “full term” and healthy for the arrival of a baby.

If our baby is born before the 21st of October, its astrological sign will be a Libra. If it chooses to bake a little longer, the baby will be a Scorpio just like Karl!

Boy or Girl?

We have chosen to wait until the birth of our child to find out their sex. In an age where little is left to the unknown, we felt it important to keep this a surprise.

The word sex refers to biological distinctions within the diverse spectrum of human possibilities. These include sex chromosomes (usually XX = female or XY = male, but there are other normally occurring combinations), sex organs (penis, vulva, etc.) and hormones (estrogen, testosterone, and others). Only sex is detectable prior to birth.

Gender refers to culturally prescribed expectations of how males and females should behave. Only our child can tell us about their gender identity and/or which gender norms they subscribe to or resist. A “gender reveal” prior to birth is literally impossible.

What Color?

We do not believe that the baby’s biological sex should determine what color clothes our baby should wear, or what type of toys they will play with! Feel free to picture our baby wearing any color of the rainbow, and playing with dolls as well as trains.

Who and Where?

Baby will be born at UCSF’s Betty Irene Moore Women's Hospital, only a 5 minute drive from our San Francisco home. Though hospital restrictions are changing daily due to COVID precautions, currently we anticipate that Jen will be joined by Karl and our doula, Clara Love, during labor (in addition to hospital staff that include a team of midwives).

A doula is a trained professional who provides physical and emotional support and advocacy for a birthing person and their partner. With the support of a doula, births are less likely to require medical interventions. Learn more about doulas by visiting the DONA International website.
